30 yo female with history of chemical dependency who was concerned cosmetically with her open roof deformity, saddle nose deformity (cartilaginous saddle nose) and also her wide nasal bridge. Patient underwent revision rhinoplasty but since she had not septal cartilage available, banked rib cartilage and temporalis fascia was used as a graft to correct the saddle nose. By raising her nasal bridge and narrowing her nasal bones the brow-tip aesthetics have improved. Patient is shown 3 years after surgery.
Dr. Rizk’s use of a 3D telescope helps with rapid recovery by allowing Dr. Rizk to view the interior of the nose better, so that he can avoid disturbing certain blood vessels and tissues. This high-definition, computer-assisted technology projects a picture of the nasal bridge onto a TV screen, where Dr. Rizk can get a close-up view of the area to be treated.
The 3D telescope lets Dr. Rizk see a blood-free area called the sub-Smas plane. This helps Dr. Rizk to make smaller incisions and perform precise excision of the nasal cartilage and bone, in turn leading to less bleeding and less tissue damage, because the soft tissue envelope is left intact. The result is reduced swelling and bruising, better healing and more natural outcomes.
Rhinoplasty patients also benefit from Dr. Rizk’s use of the 3D telescope because it leads to shorter recovery times. Dr. Rizk’s patients are typically up and about in about five days, as opposed to the standard two weeks.

What preoperative treatments and medications, intraoperative techniques, and postoperative treatments and medications do Dr. Rizk use?

Dr. Rizk’s rhinoplasty regimen consists of numerous treatments and medications, intraoperative techniques and postoperative treatments and medications.
Prior to surgery, Dr. Rizk suggests his patients take Vitamin C. Preparing for surgery is actually more a matter of avoiding certain supplements and medications. These include Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Excedrin, Bufferin and any other medications and supplements that can thin the blood. Such medications can lead to increased bleeding, and should therefore be avoided for two weeks before surgery.
Dr. Rizk also recommends that his patients avoid alcohol for 48 hours before surgery, and that they stop taking herbal supplements and teas one week before surgery. Smokers should quit smoking a minimum of one month before surgery.
Dr. Rizk uses a unique combination of techniques during surgery (i.e., intraoperative techniques). For example, he uses special tissue glues and dissolvable sutures that eliminate the need for nasal packing and speed up wound healing. For patients with crooked septums, he may use plastic splints. He is also well known for his use of partially closed sutures during rhinoplasty, which allow fluid to drain and lead to less swelling. Finally, Dr. Rizk uses a high-definition 3D telescope to avoid small blood vessels and sensitive tissues, thereby diminishing swelling and bruising.
Postoperatively, Dr. Rizk often prescribes pain-killers and recommends that his patients use herbal supplements such as arnica montana, which may reduce swelling. He also provides rhinoplasty patients with a Vitamin K and medrol dose pack, as well as Bactroban ointment. In some cases he recommends manual lymphatic draining for his rhinoplasty patients.

Dr. Rizk uses a number of special surgical technologies and techniques that promote rapid recovery. The combination of these methods is unique to Dr. Rizk.
One of the keys to the rapid recovery experienced by Dr. Rizk’s patients is his use of a high-definition 3D telescope. This allows for smaller incisions and greater precision. By using the 3D telescope Dr. Rizk is able to get a better view of small blood vessels and tissues that when disturbed may cause bruising and swelling.
Another element that makes Dr. Rizk’s rapid recovery regimen unique is his use of special tissue glues and dissolvable sutures inside the nose. These aid the healing process by eliminating the need for nasal packing, which can disturb nasal tissues and lead to prolonged swelling. Dr. Rizk pioneered a technique whereby he only partially closes the incisions. This revolutionary method, which allows for natural drainage and prevents blood and fluid from collecting under the skin, is unique to Dr. Rizk’s rapid recovery program. The incisions self-seal within about five days.
Dr. Rizk also uses a unique sculpting technique that contributes to rapid recovery. Dr. Rizk’s technique for removing a bump is unique because he does not use traditional large non-powered rasps which creates significant skin bruising and swelling by its back/forth movement. Dr. Rizk uses instead powered-circular micro-rasps which are much more accurate and due to its circular motion do not traumatize the overlying skin. Specifically, Dr. Rizk sculpts at a layer below the muscle layer directly on bone and cartilage-a layer with less blood vessels and less bleeding. This “clean plane” approach reduces bruising. Moreover, sculpting at this deep muscle layer that is above the cartilage and bone eliminates harsh edges and softens the nose’s shape, resulting in a more natural look.
Amazingly, patients who undergo rhinoplasty with Dr. Rizk’s unique rapid recovery program typically look presentable within five days.
In the March/April 2013 issue of Modern Aesthetics Magazine, Dr. Rizk shared his outlook on the future of rhinoplasty in his article, “A 21st Century Approach to Rhinoplasty: A Marriage of Form and Function.” According to Dr. Rizk, a modern nose job preserves the overall characteristics of the original nose, making small alterations to straighten or refine the overall shape. Dr. Rizk’s highly natural approach ensures that his rhinoplasty work stands the test of time, simply creating a greater harmony with the nose and the rest of the facial features. His use of advanced 3D high-definition technology also increases surgical precision, resulting in reduced swelling, bruising, scarring and recovery time.
Dr. Rizk is able to achieve a rapid recovery after rhinoplasty thanks to a combination of instructions given to his patients, the techniques he performs and the medications and remedies he prescribes.
Prior to surgery, Dr. Rizk instructs his patients to avoid anything that might thin out the blood — which can increase the chance of excessive bleeding and prolonged recovery — for two weeks prior to and following surgery. This includes but is not limited to aspirin, Motrin, Advil, garlic, fish oil, and herbal teas and remedies such as gingko biloba and St. John’s wort. Let Dr. Rizk know if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications so he can advise you.
Dr. Rizk also asks his patients to avoid alcohol for 48 hours before surgery, as it too can increase the risk of bleeding, as well as swelling. Finally, he insists that smoking be avoided for any number of reasons, but one of them is that it interferes with healing and therefore can prolong the recovery period. Dr. Rizk recommends that his patients use arnica montana (a natural plant extract) prior to surgery to help reduce swelling.
Actions Dr. Rizk takes during the rhinoplasty procedure also play a role in his patients’ rapid recovery. For example, he uses certain tissue glues as well as dissolvable sutures in order to avoid the need for packing, which can cause undue bruising and swelling. He has also pioneered a suturing technique in which the sutures are not fully closed; this allows fluid to drain between the stitches, reducing the severity of swelling and leading to far more rapid recovery than with tightly closed incisions. It also eliminates the need for drains that can prolong recovery.
In addition, Dr. Rizk’s use of a high-definition 3D telescope helps his patients achieve rapid recovery following rhinoplasty. The scope allows Dr. Rizk to avoid disturbing small blood vessels and sensitive tissues, which might lead to increased swelling and bruising.
Dr. Rizk takes a number of postoperative measures to ensure rapid recovery. He advises his patients to continue taking arnica montana pills, and he gives them a Vitamin K and Medrol dose pack, as well as a kit with several medicines that can help speed up their recovery. In some cases, Dr. Rizk recommends manual lymphatic drainage massage to help his patients recover more rapidly. He always advises his patients that they must avoid smoking at all costs.
It is important to follow all of Dr. Rizk’s postoperative instructions carefully to achieve a rapid recovery.
